I like that “Aha!” when someone points out a simple observation often overlooked because of familiarity or the ubiquitous nature of a thing. Like when Penelope Trunk, The Brazen Careerist caught my eye with this headline: Five workplace practices that should be over. Now.

Voice Mail
Call missed = call back. Many companies, like Microsoft, send VM directly to email. As far as it impacts productivity, we agree. -
Reply-to-All Button
The epitome of mailbox clutter, use of this feature will stall productivity and can be hazardous to your career. -
Workplace Candy Machines
We’ll pass on this one. Taking chocolate out of the business office supply chain could have unexpected results. -
Soliciting Money at Work
This one is tricky, so we’ll ask for your help. Yeah? or Nay? -
The 800-Person Office Party
Unless it’s a company sponsored barbeque or sporting event, we’d have to agree.
I am not sure I agree with #5 because I LOVE PARTIES – big, small, little; all parties are fun.
What I do think is provocative but my personal best is “Email is the new snail mail”. I get 200-300 email’s daily. I totally agree with what Gartner analyst Whit Andrews said in his keynote at Orlando, “I spend more time deleting emails and feeling more productive.” I think a lot more people agree with me including Robert.
