he who owns the data wins

I was in a meeting where the conversation was about supply chain visibility, actionable intelligence, analytics, & reporting. The key to any of the above being of any value, regardless of bell or whistle, is access to the data (both structured & unstructured) in play. At this point you are thinking, “No duh, Paul”. Well, the sizzle & focus always seems to be at the presentation layer, where the ability to get to the data should be the top priority before worrying about the presentation, thus the phrase, “He who owns the data WINS!” That statement can be interpreted in many different ways, but for this bloglet, it’s imperative that as the data is racing around, someone or something (insert shameless plug for BizManager or Inovisworks, but trust me, I didn’t start the bloglet with this intention, it just happened during my stream of consciousness) must be involved with the data to be able to scrutinize and transmit to the presentation layer. If you don’t have control of the data, the presentation is worthless.

Your thoughts?

I would have to agree, with the proliferation of data collection sites and data scattered throughout, you cannot have supply chain visibility or any of the rest if you cannot control the data.
