Last week saw another large splash of bad publicity involving credit cards. Thousands of people had their data lost or hacked. In the 21st century, how is this still possible? There continue to be stories of large amounts of consumer data being compromised. Here are a few stories if you need a refresher:
-
Personal information on 650,000 credit card holders is missing – story
-
45.7 million credit and debit cards compromised – story
-
40 million credit card numbers hacked - story
The Identity Theft Resource Center stated that there was a “six-fold increase last year in the number of records reported compromised in the United States to 125 million.” That is a huge number, but are there ways to prevent it?
One easy way, as described here by the FTC, is to “take steps to ensure the secure transmission of customer information.” Email and FTP are NOT secure ways to do this, nor is transporting back-up tapes. Managed File Transfer(MFT) is the most secure way to transmit customer information. Managed File Transfer solutions safeguard the sending of data, regardless of whether it is internal or external. These solutions make sure the information gets to where it needs to go and nowhere else. They also help eliminate manual transfers of data. You need full knowledge into the document lifecycle when the data is as sensitive as personal information about your customers is.
So, the question is, is your data secure? What are you doing to secure it? Are you transferring sensitive information via email or FTP? These solutions are not secure, but there is an existing solution that’s been used to move data securely between companies for years – Managed File Transfer. Some financial institutions may use the technology today, but they may use it in a point-to-point environment focused on a single type of data transfer. Truth be told, wouldn’t you prefer to look into an MFT solution rather than send a note to all your customers explaining a loss of data?
