DEBATE STARTER: XML vs. EDI

As a developer whose primary focus in on eCommerce translation products, I am faced with the head-to-head competition of EDI vs. XML for dominance in the messaging arena. And, much as I prefer to avoid athletic metaphors, I can’t help but compare this to a particular sporting event. Although initial hype on the XML side might have suggested a drag race that would be over before one knew it (with XML the presumed underdog and obvious winner), it has turned out to be much more like a cricket match (which can last for days and, in my case, can seem quite incomprehensible when it comes to determining a winner).

David’s recent post on how the Supply Chain is becoming increasingly important for businesses, got me to thinking about why is this trend emerging. To that end, I spent some time reading analyst information, looking up industry trends and understanding the events in the supply chain and their impact on a business. Have you ever been caught unawares by a change to the EDI or XML standards that required emergency retooling or reduced you’re operations to virtual rubble?

Have you ever wondered why in tarnation the standards were changed the way they were?
