I was reading some news online and came across a story about information regarding a new Sonic the Hedgehog game being hacked. Sonic the Hedgehog, for those who don’t know, is a character created by Sega that first appeared in video games but since has spread into comic books and cartoon shows. He possesses the ability to run faster than the speed of sound and has been featured in quite a few games since release in 1991. I personally have only played the game once or twice, because my abilities for games ends at sports and first person realistic shooters. Trying to control and running, jumping and spinning porcupine-looking character and I was out of my element.

Now, to the important part of this blog. Sega is working on a new game, Sonic: Unleashed. They were obviously trading documents between the development teams in Japan, North American and Europe via file transfer protocol (FTP). As we have stated before, FTP is not a solution to send documents securely. Managed File Transfer (MFT) is the solution for that. We have heard numerous stories recently about data getting hacked, and companies are doing themselves no service by continuing to use unsecure means of communication.

Thank goodness it was some screenshots and press information about the upcoming title. Still, something I am sure Sega did not want released yet, but it could have been worse. Every day companies use FTP to transfer sensitive documents. They assume it is secure. It isn’t. Just think, if a magazine can find pictures and press information on the new Sonic game, your payroll, 401k filings, intellectual property and so much more are all at risk. Just how secure are your documents?

One final note about MFT. Not only are your documents secure – with complete document lifecycle tracking, but you can send large files as well. Long gone are the days of sending a large document via mail, FTP or email to China. Or setting up an orphan web page and giving someone access.
