Approximately 18 months ago, TLi, our “trusted” translator for the System i released version V6.2.0 and somewhere buried deep down in the API documentation was a reference to a new feature entitled “How Web Services fit in TrustedLink.”

Now I will admit, that as a developer of software there are some times when you need to keep pace with the current market sizzle on the latest technology, and the SOA/Web Services was one of those times. As a long time ISV partner of IBM, we often try to support their go-forward strategy for the System i (don’t get me started on the platform name changing policy) and two years ago, SOA was very much at the forefront and still is. However, as we System i folks know, the gap between theory and reality takes time to close.

Low and behold, when a TLi customer called a member of our support team to ask for further information on this feature, they were somewhat confused by our response of “what web service offering?” Long story short, we had not received a single call about Web Services since the V6.2.0 launch in July 2007 and we were caught a bit off guard, abit like someone saying “Do you remember that article in the New York Times 18 months ago?”

However, as the customer sought assistance through another channel, the more seasoned TLi support folks jumped on it and replied as we diligently do with the current follow-up documentation and explanations. So now seems as good a time as any to ask the question again!   Have you implemented Web Services internally? What types of web services have you implemented first and why? Are you interested in learning more about how TLi supports Web Services?

Contact us now…….we might know what you are asking about……;-)
