We recently sponsored an informative white paper called “Integrating EDI into Accounting and ERP Systems” written by our friends at Vantage Point & Associates. It rehashed some old yet great points as it discussed the alliance between EDI and ERP/Accounting Systems. This relationship is the very nature of EDI. Can your accounting system talk to my accounting system in a universal language?

The white paper discusses a historical timeline of EDI and ends with present time and “EDI Thrives Once Again.” I believe our own Bill Chessman covered this with his EDI is Dead (Long Live EDI) post. EDI is far from dead, and it does continue to thrive not only in the regular software environment but also in outsourced services offerings. This growth and sustainability is possible partially due to the increasing complexity of ERP systems and the necessity for Company A to pull information out of their ERP to produce a purchase order and for Company B to take this purchase order, pull it into their own ERP and produce an invoice and an Advanced Shipping Notice. As long as this handoff is necessary, EDI will continue to flourish.

As I’ve mentioned before, I participate in the X12 standards development process and attend the trimester meetings. The most recent of these meetings was held the first week of June way down yonder in New Orleans. On the plus side, I love the food there. On the minus side, the food doesn’t like me quite as much as it used to—it misses my gall bladder (gone these last 10 years) almost as much as I do. But I’m getting beside myself.

Perhaps you’ve heard the rumors of a new envelope to replace the venerable ISA/IEA structure. I’m here to tell you those rumors, so far, are patently false. The ISA/IEA and its inner cousin, GS/GE are doing just fine, thanks and have a reasonably good long life ahead of them…unless that all changes.

Today was an exciting day for the Inovis UK Blog! Our favorite Brits published their first two posts! Stuart Prouse did an excellent introduction post about himself, what he’ll be discussing and what readers have in store, while Tracey Robertson talked about the benefits of EDI and global data synchronization. For further information about Inovis UK, check out the Inovis UK homepage.

Inovis actively supports regional user groups and 2008 represents a new opportunity to work with NEECOM, a long standing user group which many of our customers participate in and Inovis has supported for many years. NEECOM is the New England Electronic Commerce User’s Group for B2B and EDI professional and one of the largest in the nation. NEECOM is a great venue to meet others and see how they are tackling the challenges of operating complex supply chains which are compliant to their trading partner requirements and provide increased efficiency for their businesses.

Next week is NEECOM’s spring event and Inovis is looking forward to meeting our customers, their trading partners and the industry leaders who will be at the event to ensure we can bring back the lessons learned and share them our user community.
