I just received my latest update from “LinkedIn” showing updates to my network and updates made by those to whom I’m connected and it got me to thinking about how businesses are trying to remodel their use of the web. We’ve all heard the drumbeat around Internet 3.0 and proposed use of some of the social network models, such as those used by “Facebook,” for business use. Don’t know about you, but I am still a bit confused about the definition of exactly what Internet 2.0 was/is, how it has been used, whether it was universally adopted and generated great success for those businesses that adopted it, and whether it is now already out-of-date both technologically and functionally. This is not in any way to underestimate the POTENTIAL power of the integration of the latest technology and operating models but it seems to be far easier for marketing departments to create another set of announcements around the “new and improved” Internet3.0 than build compelling success stories around “click and mortar” businesses in the key industry segments that drive our economy.
